The Bedford varsity girls soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2015 MHSAA State Tournament with an 8-0 victory Tuesday evening at Wyandotte Roosevelt behind the first career hat trick from junior midfielder Madeline Reau. The Kicking Mules improved to 6-12-1 with the win, while the Bears conclude their inaugural season with a 2-15-0 mark. Bedford controlled the play early on but Roosevelt freshman goalkeeper Faith Billinger was up to the task for the first 16 minutes as the Kicking Mules held a 12-0 edge in shots attempted. Bedford finally broke through just after the 16 minute mark as sophomore defender Morgan Dietrich scored her first career varsity goal off a corner kick from junior defender Sadie Oswald. The Kicking Mules increased their lead to 2-0 just two-and-a-half minutes later as sophomore Kyleigh South netted her seventh off the season off a pass from junior Lia Manera. Reau tallied her first of the game and third of the season at the 21:01 mark off a rebound of a shot by freshman Kate Chuhy. Bedford then recorded three goals on three shots in a span of 1:47 to push the lead to 6-0. Junior Elise Covrett lit the lamp for the third time this season off an assist from senior Cara Stang at 26:24. Reau completed her hat trick with goals at 27:26 from Covrett and 28:11 from Stang. Chuhy notched her first varsity goal with just over five-and-a-half minutes remaining before intermission off an assist from South. Bedford led 38-1 after 40 minutes in shots attempted and 16-1 in shots on goal. South's lamp lighter just 7:33 into the second half ended the contest. Bedford starting goalie Grace Brown made one save in her 50th career appearance between the pipes for the Kicking Mules. Freshman Kassidy Koepfler did not face any shots in the second half. Billinger made eight saves on 12 shots before being injured on Bedford's fourth goal. Cassidy Medrano turned aside five of Bedford's nine shots in her 22 minutes of action. Also playing well for Bedford on defense were senior Erin Jacobs and junior Kortney Sheeder, while midfielders Maddie Weiss, Chelsea Bauders and Reagan Schmus helped set up Bedford's offensive attack which had a 46-1 margin in shots attempted. The Kicking Mules will play their MHSAA Second Round contest on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Belleville. The 2015 class will try to become the second in school history to advance to the district finals, a feat accomplished only by the 2011 squad.
