Saturday, the lady mules competed at the Northview Wildcat Invitational held at Whiteford Valley Golf Course.
There were 11 teams competing today. The Bedford girls finished in second place (79 points) behind Anthony Wayne (57 points). Bedford was the only Michigan school in the race, and was competing in their first and only invitational on schedule this season.
We have had tremendous success this season and it was definitely an eye opener for our first multi team race of the year. The format allowed spectators on the course and with more than one other school in attendance it really felt like any other year. The silence and small race numbers we have been accustomed to so far this season were drowned out by the fans and runners competing. This was definitely a temperature check for the team, a stepping stone that will provide us the opportunity to grow and prepare for the championship part of the season.
Many great things happened at today's race. Madison Foster led the way for the team finishing 1st place overall in the women's race in a time of 18:02.7. She just missed the overall school record at Bedford of 18:00, and set a new junior record previously held by Isabella Johnson. A blistering early pace was set by a St. Ursula runner (Annie Bennett 18:36) over the first 800m. Maddy was able to stay with her and ended up leading the rest of the way. Other finishers for the lady mules: 13th (Alyssa Dorn 20:52), 20th (Madi Heinrichs 21:20), 22nd (Lauren Sancrant 21:29), 23rd (Sam Sexton 21:32), 28th (Bekah Asselin 21:43), and 40th (Emma Bushroe 22:23).
Overall a solid performance for the team with many of the Bedford runners from other waves running personal bests or season best times. The girls have been training extremely hard, and this race revealed where our team is truly at and how we can improve.
